Those longing for a holiday adventure this Thanksgiving can find one right here in South Carolina.
“Thanksgiving might be a holiday synonymous with home-cooked meals, but it’s also a popular time for travel, as many people get that Thursday and Friday off from work,” said Southern Living, which recommended two destinations to visit in the Palmetto State.
If you live in the Upstate, here are two places you should consider traveling to for Thanksgiving fun, and other destinations worth spending this time of the year farther south.
Charleston is ‘even better’ during Thanksgiving
Visitors often rave about Charleston’s beaches during the summer months when temperatures are high. However, the Holy City is a real Thanksgiving treat come November, when winter’s festivities begin to unfold like your favorite holiday candy.
If you plan on venturing to the city on Thanksgiving, consider participating in the annual Turkey Day Run & Gobble Wobble ― a U.S. Track & Field certified five-kilometer race where runners dash through downtown and out to the peninsula. After burning off those calories, you’ll likely be hungry for a Thanksgiving feast, best enjoyed at Halls Chophouse or the courtyard at 82 Queen, according to Southern Living.
“As night falls, drive through the sparkling lights at James Island County Park or watch the sunset from Pitt Street Bridge to end your evening with Charleston’s signature charm,” Casey Keller, Wandering Everywhere founder and South Carolina-based travel expert, told Southern Living.

Montage Palmetto Bluff is ‘Lowcountry Thanksgiving done right’
If you’ve recently visited Charleston and are interested in exploring elsewhere, Southern Living recommends another coastal destination that is just a short drive away from the city. Montage Palmetto Bluff in Bluffton is a classic Southern escape nestled between Hilton Head Island and Savannah, Georgia. At the resort, guests will be able to “bike to nightly s’more pits (and) enjoy oyster roasts along the rivers,” Keller told Southern Living.
Here are exciting events the resorts have scheduled for Thanksgiving weekend (Tuesday, Nov. 25-Monday, Dec. 1):
-
Moreland Oyster Roast & Southern Supper @ Moreland Landing
-
BBQ, Bourbon, and Bingo @ May River Lawn
-
Gratitude Yoga @ Sunrise Lawn
-
Thanksgiving Grand Buffet @ Wilson Ballroom
-
Georgia Southern Raptor Show @ Inn Backyard
-
Lighting of the Village @ Wilson Village Green
