PETALING JAYA: Malaysian food is among the top 30 best cuisines in the world, at least according to international food and travel guide website TasteAtlas.
Based on the website’s newest 100 Best Cuisines in the World 25/26 Awards, Malaysia ranks 29th in the world, just behind Russian cuisine and just above Moroccan cuisine in the rankings.
The guide said some of Malaysia’s most popular highly-rated dishes include iconic favourites like roti canai, laksa, char kway teow and nasi lemak.
“Based on 590,228 valid ratings for 18,912 foods in our database, these cuisines have earned the highest average scores,” the website said on its award webpage.
Malaysia’s humble roti canai also ranked as the fifth best food in both the bread and snack category, while the karipap earned the fifth spot for savoury pastries.
It also said that Malaysian food was most highly rated by users from the United States of America (rated 4.2/5) and Indonesia (rated 4.1/5)
The website, which was founded in 2018, primarily uses reviews and recommendations from gastronomy professionals and diehard food critics during the judging process.
It also collected crowdsourced ratings from users of its website who rate individual dishes, ingredients and restaurants of the various national cuisines with the final rankings based on weighted averages that are filtered to exclude spam, bots and unreliable votes.
Meanwhile, Singapore cuisine is ranked 90th on the same list.
