I recently had the honor of
attending and speaking at the Black Travel Expo (BTE) in Atlanta, Georgia, held
June 28-29, 2025, at the stylish Thompson Buckhead.

    This wasn’t just another
travel conference – it was a powerful gathering of Black travelers, travel
advisors, creators, and industry leaders from around the world who came
together to socialize, learn, and network.

Now in its third year, the Black Travel Expo was
founded by Maurice Foley, who saw a gap in the travel industry. After attending
numerous travel shows where Black travelers were underrepresented, he decided
to create an event that would allow Black travelers to connect, share their
experiences, and inspire one another. His vision for BTE is to empower Black
travelers to explore the world confidently while fostering a strong sense of
community and belonging within the travel industry.

The event was moderated by Emmy Award-winning travel
journalist Tomeka Jones, adding her signature energy and expertise to the
sessions. Attendees included a vibrant mix of media professionals, tour
operators, travel advisors, content creators, tech innovators, and passionate
travelers – all under one roof.

I had the privilege of sitting on the panel titled
“The Black Male Traveler: Redefining Adventure, Identity, and Global
Exploration.” This powerful discussion brought together Black male
travelers from across the globe to share personal stories, dispel myths, and
redefine what adventure and exploration mean for Black men today.

    Other thought-provoking sessions included:

    • “The Expat Life: Navigating Identity, Culture, and
      Opportunity Abroad”
    • “Next-Gen Storytellers: Shaping the Future of
      Travel Content Creation.”

We also explored the latest in travel technology from
    innovators like:

    • Emil Yongoueth of Greenbook Global
    • Charles Shima, Founder & CEO of Tourifique Travel
    • Samella Watson, Founder of BLCK

The keynote presentations were just as inspiring.
    Highlights included:

    • “How AI is Elevating Your Journey” by Wanda
      Thomas
    • “Travel Hacking 101: Unlock Luxury Adventures to
Your Dream Destinations” by Ronnie Dunston

Representatives from tourism boards, including those
from Louisville, New York, and Kenya, were also in attendance, showcasing their
destinations and sharing initiatives to engage Black travelers. Louisville
Tourism even sponsored an unforgettable after-party, complete with music, great
food, curated gift bags, and a showcase of the vibrant Black experience that
    can be found in Louisville.

It’s no secret that Black travel is experiencing rapid
growth. According to the latest economic studies by the Black Travel Alliance
and MMGY Travel Intelligence, Black travelers in North America spend over $145
billion annually on travel, a figure that continues to rise. The challenge
remains: finding destinations and suppliers that genuinely want to welcome and
    cater to Black travelers.

Black travelers are not a monolith – their interests
and travel styles are diverse. However, one thing remains true: they want to
explore places that fully and authentically embrace them. While they are ready
to explore the world with no boundaries, past experiences remind them to travel
    thoughtfully and intentionally.

That’s precisely why events like the Black Travel Expo
are so important. They create spaces for Black travelers to come together,
share their stories, and empower each other to continue pursuing their passion
for exploring the world confidently and boldly.
